Worldwide food shortages could spark violence

Further to our previous post about the reality of food shortages in the world today, the Guardian reports that these shortages may result in civil unrest and political instability. I’m still trying to understand why European farmers are being subsidised to create massive food surpluses which are stored and not used. Surely any surpluses could be put to better use, ie. feeding people with no food?
