I voted for Bush in the last two elections. So you can’t accuse me of being partisan in making this point.
You know what really worries me? The mainstream media is getting criticized for bias towards Obama. Personally, I don’t see it. Instead, I see a media that is not doing a good enough job at covering the better candidate in a better light than his lesser opponent. A journalist is not biased for reporting reality. Bias is when you try to make imbalance look like balance. In my opinion, the more worrisome bias is when someone tries to make the case that a trashy romance novel is on literary par with The Great Gatsby. John McCain and his campaign are the political equivalent of a trashy romance novel. Barack Obama and his campaign are the equivalent of The Great Gatsby.
When you try to take an obviously better candidate and make him equal to a lesser candidate, you are distorting the truth.
There is no need to for journalists to pretend that two candidates are equally good. Because in this case, they are not.
So what worries me is that we are burdened by a media that is more afraid of bias than of presenting clear choices. Our society has bought into the naive view that political choices always have to be close calls. Or we artificially constrain ourselves to giving one option more credit than it deserves. McCain has run a terrible campaign. McCain has not offered any hope for a country that desperately needs hope. McCain has gone into the gutter on several occassions. Obama has run an amazing campaign. Obama has offered this country tremendous hope. Obama has not once gone into the gutter (unless you consider the defensive move of bringing up the Keating 5 a gutter move).
Here’s the deal people: Obama is the better choice for president. For everyone.
Not just the better choice for the media elite. Not just the best choice for partisan democrats.
He’s better on almost all fronts. So let’s get beyond this illusion of fair and balanced criteria. There is an obvious better choice in this election, and we need to make the choice as a country.
I voted for Bush twice. And I hope I get to vote for Obama twice too.
