There seems to be this hidden assumption in our culture that standing out from the crowd is a good thing. But I’m the kind of guy that likes to question the assumptions of a culture. Why do you want to stand out from the crowd? To gain attention? Well, look at what attention does to people like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. Or what about all the child stars who become drug addicts.
Seriously, when I think about the people I most admire they are people who shun fame, do good, and don’t care two shits about what other people think about them.

Success doesn’t guarantee security. Turns out that success may even increase your risk of failure and ruin. Case in point, two stories from last week: first, it looks like 60% of all retired NBA players go broke five years after retirement. Second, there’s a long list of famous people who went bankrupt at one point or another, and the list isn’t limited to modernity. Seems like a timeless problem.
