Seriously, I am not the harbinger of crisis. However, one can’t help but notice the growing problems with food supplies around the world. As I blogged yesterday, Japan is facing shortages in certain foods. Last night news was trickling in about food shortages starting to appear in the USA, and more specifically Costco. Apparently the situation in some areas has got to the stage where grocers are restricting the amount of staple foods that can be purchased per customer. The problem is, such constraints only cause more hysteria, which exacerbates the problem further.

There is a worldwide resource crisis in full-swing right now, and it’s coming home to roost. Costco are seeing customers stocking up on staple products as prices continue to climb ever higher. China has only 12 days worth of coal in their supply line. Japan is starting to suffer food shortages requiring their government to invest huge sums of money to keep the country fed. On the bright side, summer is coming.

We’ve talked previously about the food shortages the world now faces, which in my opinion is incredible considering we actually produce more food than we need. Last night I heard one good suggestion on how to address the situation: stop offering Buy One Get One Free (BOGOF) offers in the stores. I personally know that much of the food I purchase is thrown out because, for whatever reason, we didn’t get round to eating it. What a waste! But one other sound proposal would be to stop paying farmers to not grow crops. It’s a ludicrous situation really that should be sorted out for all our benefit.

Further to our previous post about the reality of food shortages in the world today, the Guardian reports that these shortages may result in civil unrest and political instability. I’m still trying to understand why European farmers are being subsidised to create massive food surpluses which are stored and not used. Surely any surpluses could be put to better use, ie. feeding people with no food?
